More about Calgary's Eau Claire Neighbourhood

The neighbourhood of Eau Claire in Calgary, Alberta, Canada is situated directly north of Downtown, and south of the Bow River, as well as north of 4th Avenue. Eau Claire is a well-known area in Calgary, which comprises a mix of condos along the river, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, a spacious public plaza, and urban parkland. The district is home to Calgary's Festival District, which is encompassed within Eau Claire.

Eau Claire's development originated from reclaimed industrial land that lines the Bow River and lies immediately north of 3rd Avenue South. Prince's Island Park, an enormous urban park situated on an island in the Bow River, is located north of Eau Claire. The park is a hub for summer festivals such as the Calgary Folk Music Festival, Carifest, Shakespeare in the Park, and various busking activities. Eau Claire Market and a range of pubs and restaurants can be found within the Eau Claire neighbourhood. Moreover, the district lies on the city's extensive network of pedestrian pathways and trails that run alongside the Bow River pathway.

What is Eau Claire Known For?

Eau Claire Market is the heart of the neighbourhood and a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The mall was constructed on former industrial land, located just south of the Bow River. It boasts several one-of-a-kind shops and galleries, a six-screen Cineplex Odeon multiplex, a food court, and various restaurants that serve an array of cuisines. Although the market has experienced a decline in popularity over the years, plans are currently in development to demolish and rebuild it to cater to a more diverse demographic, serving the needs of the wider residential community.

The new and improved market will feature an enclosed entrance to the future underground 2 Street SW Station, part of the Calgary Green Line, and inspired by the design of the Central Library. At the north end of the market, there will be a tunnel portal integrated into the building, leading the CTrain to north-central Calgary via a new bridge over the Bow River. Construction of the station is expected to begin in 2024.

Eau Claire History

Eau Claire, a neighbourhood in Calgary, gets its name from one of the city's earliest industries - a sawmill that was moved from Eau Claire, Wisconsin and run by mostly Norwegian mill workers. In 1886, the area on the banks of the Bow River was chosen for its convenient access to fallen timber. The community was subsequently named after the Eau Claire Lumber Company.

Today, Eau Claire Plaza lies at the heart of the Festival District and is undergoing a significant modernization and redevelopment project. The objective is to better integrate the plaza with the city, Prince's Island, Eau Claire Market, Barclay Mall, and the other surrounding hotels, restaurants, and businesses. The neighbourhood has an area redevelopment plan already in place.
